Konnichiwa こんにちは – Hello!

An Introduction to Japanese Language and Culture

Course Language: Japanese and English

Welcome to your journey into the world of the Japanese language and culture!

This course is designed for complete beginners without prior knowledge. From the outset, our dedicated course leader will guide you enthusiastically and expertly through the fundamentals of spoken and written Japanese, with a strong focus on interaction. You will develop the skills needed for everyday communication, all the while discovering the cultural context behind the language.

Course Topics and Content:

Topic 1: Nihongo – The Hiragana Syllabary

  • Lesson 1: Greetings and basic self-introductions
  • Lesson 2: Useful expressions for the classroom

Topic 2: About Me – The Katakana Syllabary

  • Lesson 3: Talking about yourself
  • Lesson 4: Introducing your family

Topic 3: Food – Introduction to the First Six Kanji

  • Lesson 5: Talking about favorite foods and breakfast; offering someone a drink
  • Lesson 6: Going out for lunch with friends

On average, you will cover around three to five lessons per semester, depending on the group's learning pace and the number of lessons, which may vary due to organisational issues. In accordance with the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), it will take you approximately two years to complete level A1. If you are aiming for JLPT N5, please ask your course leader for more information.
